Riding Central Orgegon Horse Trails
Black Butte Horse Camps and Trails
|
Black Butte is a 6,400-foot cinder cone that is blanketed by a lush ponderosa forest.
Located about a half hour northwest of Bend, the Black Butte area of Central Oregon offers several
easy trails that can be ridden from early spring through late fall.
|
Graham Corral Horse Camp:
In spring when snow still blankets the high country, Graham
Corral is an inviting base camp for the Metolius-Windigo Trail
and Black Butte area trails.
Sisters Cow Camp:
Also located on the Metolius-Windigo Trail, Sisters Cow Camp
provides a good parking spot for day rides in the area. It
has limited amenities for overnight camping.
Graham/Metolius River Trail:
This portion of the Metolius-Windigo Trail travels through
ponderosa forest and older clear-cut areas that provide nice
views to the east from the flanks of Black Butte.

Graham/Sisters Cow Camp Trail:
The trail from Graham Corral to Sisters Cow Camp is a pleasant,
forested ride that is accessible almost year-round. It has
little elevation gain, good footing, and nice mountain views
through breaks in the forest.
Green Ridge Trail:
Green Ridge is a fault-block ridge that runs north from Black
Butte to the Warm Springs Indian Reservation. The trail follows
the crest of the ridge, affording good views of Mt. Washington,
Three Fingered Jack, Mt. Jefferson, Black Butte, and the Metolius
Basin.
|
Lower Butte Loop Trail:
This is an easy, pleasant horse trail through ponderosa forest.
The terrain is relatively flat and much of the ride is on double-track
dirt roads. There are nice mountain views from the upper portion
of the trail.
Sisters Cow Camp/Squaw Creek Trail:
This trail travels primarily through lovely ponderosa forest
and has little elevation gain after the initial climb out
of Sisters Cow Camp. The treeless hillside above the camp
offers fabulous views of Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Washington, and
the Three Sisters. The trail crosses several creeks so there
are opportunities to water your horses along the way.

|
Sisters Tie Trail:
This ride is a nearly-level jaunt through ponderosa forest
from Indian Ford campground to the outskirts of Sisters. Glimpses
of nearby Black Butte are visible through the trees.
Upper Butte Loop Trail:
This trail makes a complete loop around Black Butte. The trail
is a bit overgrown in places, but the mountain views are wonderful
and the trail is accessible about 9 months of the year.
