Riding Central Orgegon Horse Trails
Newberry Volcano Horse Camps and Trails
|
Newberry National Volcanic Monument, located
about 45 minutes south of Bend, was established to preserve
the unique geological features of the caldera that marks
the remains of Newberry Volcano. Paulina Lake and East Lake,
in the bottom of the caldera, are popular boating and fishing
areas. The area’s equestrian trails provide access
to some of the most interesting geologic features in Oregon.
|
Chief Paulina Horse Camp:
This is a beautiful horse camp, with plenty of shade and sturdy
log corrals. It’s the perfect base for a variety of
day rides in the Newberry Crater area.
Swamp Wells Horse Camp:
Swamp Wells Horse Camp isn’t easy to get to, and it’s
not much to look at. Most of the trees in the area were cut
down because of a pine beetle infestation so it has little
shade, and it has stock water only seasonally. However, the
trails in the area are nice, and it isn’t heavily used.
So if solitude is what you are seeking, this is the horse
camp for you.

Crater Rim Loop Trail:
This ride is very popular with endurance riders, who enjoy
the expansive views and varied terrain. The trail up Paulina
Peak is very steep and difficult and the loop is a long one,
so this is a trail for well-conditioned horses and experienced
riders. Fortunately, there are trailheads at several points
around the bottom of the crater, so you can ride the entire
loop in segments.
LaPine State Park Trail:
The LaPine State Park trails are accessible when the high
country trails are still deep in snow, and they offer lovely
views of the Deschutes and Fall rivers. It also boasts the
largest ponderosa pine in Oregon (191 feet high, 326 inches
around, and over 500 years old).
|
North Paulina Peak Loop Trail:
This is a long ride, but much easier than the Paulina Peak
and Crater Rim loops. It offers very nice views from along
the crater rim near North Paulina Peak.
Paulina Peak Loop Trail:
If your horse is in good condition but you don’t want
to commit to the 21-mile loop around the entire crater, this
trail is a good alternative. You’ll also see the spectacular
views from near the summit of Paulina Peak and have an up-close
look at Big Obsidian Flow.

|
Peter Skene Ogden Trail:
The trail winds along beside Paulina Creek, past lovely pools,
waterfalls, and rapids. Wildflowers are abundant, and Paulina
Falls spills spectacularly over a volcanic ledge into a canyon
some 80 feet below.
Swamp Wells Trail:
From Swamp Wells horse camp, you can ride north to Horse Butte
or south to Newberry Crater. There are also several forest
roads in the area that provide riding opportunities.
