Riding Central Orgegon Horse Trails
Southern Cascade Lakes Horse Camps and Trails
|
As you might expect, the lakes are the main attraction in the Southern Cascade Lakes
area. It is home to the Crane Prairie and Wickiup reservoirs, plus Cultus, Little Cultus, Davis,
Charlton, and Waldo lakes and many smaller lakes. The trails in the region tend to be relatively
easy, with good footing and little elevation change.
|
Cultus Corral:
Cultus Corral is a very nice horse camp that provides easy
access to the trails in the Cultus Lake area.
Bench Mark Butte Trail:
The trail departs from Cultus Corral and follows several forest
roads over the flank of Bench Mark Butte to the Corral Swamp
trailhead. With the exception of one short, rocky stretch
and a couple of switchbacks, the trail is an easy one.

Bench Mark/Cultus Loop Trail:
This is a long but easy and scenic loop trail. Some of the
ride is in fir and hemlock forest, and some is in lodgepole
forest. It passes lovely (but swampy) meadows and several
lakes.
Corral Lakes Trail:
This is a pretty ride that runs through the forest along the
north shore of Cultus Lake, then veers northeast through fir
and lodgepole forest to North and South Corral Lakes. The
views along Cultus Lake are nice, and North Corral Lake offers
a good picnic spot.
|
Irish & Taylor Lakes Trail:
This is a fun road ride that goes past the trailheads for
Lemish Lake and Many Lakes, and ends at the lovely Irish and
Taylor lakes near the junction of Road 4636 and the Pacific
Crest Trail.
Many Lakes Loop Trail:
The Many Lakes trail is aptly named, as it weaves among dozens
of small lakes that lie scattered through the forest. The
trail is in excellent condition. There is little elevation
gain or loss, so you can trot or canter if you like, but you
won’t want to because you’ll be savoring the views
of the lovely lakes as you pass them.

Winopee Lake Trail:
The first two miles of the trail are in the forest along the
north shore of Cultus Lake, with views of the lake through
the trees. Then the trail angles north, passing several pretty
meadows, eventually arriving at Winopee Lake after about 6.5
miles. Most of the ride is forested.
Winopee Tie Trail:
This is an easy, fun ride through the forest from Cultus Horse
Camp to the Winopee trailhead on the shore of Cultus Lake.
